Cathy Moriarty was 17 years old when Martin Scorsese directed her in timeless black and white for his film, Raging Bull (1980); a masterpiece for her first role, the actress portrayed Vikki LaMotta, second wife of champion boxer Jake LaMotta (played by Robert De Niro). The performance was nominated an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Not too long after her second film, the poorly-received Neighbors (1981) (a comedy featuring John Belushi & Dan Aykroyd); the actress was in a near-fatal automobile accident, which resulted in a serious back injury. The subsequent physical & emotional rehabilitation, and the last minute cancellation of a 1985 film in which she was to co-star with Jack Nicholson (which was delayed 5 years and released as The Two Jakes (1990)) contributed to a six-year absence from the screen. The actress did not get within a mile radius of good part until she appeared in the soap opera-satire film, Soapdish (1991). The actress was wickedly funny as the voluptuous calculating Montana Moorehead. The actress went on to work prolifically in film and television, with her talent often overcompensating for the mediocre yet entertaining projects she was cast in. Noteworthy work includes Law & Order: Criminal Intent (2001), Tammy (2013), Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (1999) and Patti Cake$ (2017).
